Geography
Indonesia is the world's largest island nation, with over 13,670 islands. There are 5 large island regions: Sumatra Island, Java Island, Kalimantan (Borneo) Island, Sulawesi Island, and Irian Jaya Island (near Papua New Guinea). The distance between, Sumatra and Papua New Guinea is approximately 5,100km to the southe and 1,600km to the northwest. Indonesia is surrounded by the Indian Ocean to the south, Papua New Guinea to the east, the Andaman Sea to the northwest, and the South China Sea, Celebes Sea, Sulu Sea, and the Pacific Ocean to north.
Climate
Indonesia has tropical weather all year round, with heavy rainfall during the monsoon season. There is approximately 5 ~ 10 ° C temperature difference between the northern and southern islands and the average temperature is 25 ~ 2 ° C. During the monsoon season, it rains approximately 3,175mm on Borneo Island, 4,172mm on Sumatra Island, and 1,755mm on Java Island. The eastern islands are considerably cooler.
Wardrobe Tips
Due to the warm tropical weather, light clothing is recommended. Travelers can follow the locals and purchase a batik shirt. Traveling in the mountains can be quite chilly, so a light jacket is recommended. Although Indonesia is quite informal in clothing, shorts and other casual wear are not appropriate for visits to mosques, temples, and other places of worship. |
