    History

Turkey has been called "the cradle of civilization", due to Hattis, Hittites, Phrygians, Lycians, Lydians, Ionians, Persians, Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans all having played important roles in its rich history. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, a heroic soldier who led his country and liberated Turkey of all foreign invaders in World War I, founded the Republic of Turkey on October 29, 1923. Turkey has made incredible strides in economical growth and modernization in recent years, with 1/6th of the country's total production of goods coming from the agricultural industry. Wheat and barley farms are the largest in the country and more than 2/5 of the workers work in the agricultural industry. Turkey ranks 4th in the world in olive production, 5th in cigarettes, 7th in cotton, 10th in wheat, oranges, lamb meat, and Europe's top provider in wool. Today, Turkey is a country full of ancient historic treasures, as well as nature's treasures, with beautiful mountains, forests, lakes and oceans and attracts over 8 million tourists a year.
