Germany was a divided nation for many centuries, beginning in 1648 when the Peace of Westphalia following the Thirty Years¡¯ War separated East and the West politically. Germany was under the rule of Russia in the 18th and 19th centuries, and gained independence in 1871. Then in 1933, the rise of Hitler and the rule of the Nazi Party lead to WWII, only to be brought down in 1945 after Hitler¡¯s suicide. Soon after, the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic was born, leading to the building of the Berlin Wall that divided the prospering West and the economically troubled East. However, the end of the Cold War lead to the reunification of East and West Germany on October 3, 1990, a truly monumental moment in world history. Although there is still much dissimilarity in the economical, cultural and social structures of the two sides, the people of Germany continue to work toward bridging the gap between their differences. |
