The United Kingdom comprises Britain (England, Wales, Scotland & Northern Ireland) as well as the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. The British Empire was the greatest power in the world during the 188th and 19th centuries. However, after World War II, many nations under British rule gained independence, most recent being Hong Kong¡¯s return to China on July 1st, 1997. Today, Britain is no longer the dominating force it once was, but is still one of the leaders of the European Union. |
