Bird Watching

Where to Watch Birds in Korea: a few good hotspots..
South Korea is one of the best winter-birding and shorebird-watching destinations anywhere - and wetlands and islands will probably be at the core of any birders' plans to visit here.

Saunders's Gull: with only 7 000 remaining worldwide, Korea remains the species' winter stronghold... and it even nests here. The following sites, most with a wetland bias, have therefore been selected from the many potential ones worth a visit - in order to help you have the best chance to see some of those species which are easier to see in South Korea than anywhere else in the world: Baikal Teal, Normann's Greenshank, Spoon-billed Sandpiper, Saunders's Gull, Chinese Egret etc.

In addition to the obviously world-class sites (Saemangeum, Geum estuary, Suncheon Bay etc) several small sites have been especially included for those business-trip or casual birdwatchers (marked with a +): those who are unable to make time to get properly out of the city. Simply click on the link below, and find out what you can see at some of the best birding sites Asia has to offer!

Note : As a guide, usually san translates into English as "mountain", do as "island", cheon as "small river", gang as "large river", man as "bay", ri as "village" and myeon is a "town area" etc. For help with Korean names please to refer to the many guides or language books available.
