The growth pattern of Catholicism in Korea is
unique. It was first introduced to the nation in 1784 not as a result of foreign
missionary work, but because of interest in Catholic teaching. Since then,
Korean Catholicism has been making steady progress, producing many martyrs and
saints during an intense period of persecution carried out by the government
between 1785 and 1887. Korea has 90 holy places, and 103 Vatican-approved
saints, the fourth largest number in the world.
