Shopping Tips

  • English is spoken in some of the major department stores and in all of the Itaewon shopping district.
  • Although many shops are using the fixed price system, you may have a chance to bargain in some shops. It is easier to bargain with cash or traveler's checks. Department stores all have fixed prices.
  • It is a good idea to try on all tailored clothing before making the final payment. Alterations are easy to negotiate on the spot. Alterations or refunds are difficult to arrange through the mail.
  • Korea has a wide range of items reflecting the country's history and culture. Popular items are eelskin and celadon.
  • Antique items, such as chests and paintings, can not be exported without permission. Shop owners can provide the information on these procedures, or you can telephone the Art and Antique Assessment Office (02-662-0106).
  • There are many elegant jewelry settings available for smoky topaz, amethyst, and white jade.
  • It is best to hand-carry merchandise. Shipping can also be arranged by the hotel staff.
  • Save your receipts. Korea National Tourism Organization (KNTO) manages a Tourist Complaint Center (02-735-0101).
